Shea Walters is this week’s Northern Student Male Athlete of the Week for his timely goal against the University of Minnesota Duluth in the Final Five Quarterfinal round. Walters scored his first goal of the season six minutes into the first overtime period, sending the Beavers one round further in their first ever WCHA Final Five appearance. Walters, a junior forward from Hibbing, Minn., has played in 37 of 38 games this season for the Beavers, and had 13 assists before scoring his first goal of the season. The Beavers fell in the semifinal round to Denver, bringing an end to their season.
Kristi Buerkle is this week’s Northern Student Female Athlete of the Week for her outstanding performance at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field National Championships. Buerkle, who has practically written the BSU women’s track record book, took part in the NCAA Tournament, finishing fifth in the 400-meter dash. Her finish was good enough to place her on the All-American team, as well as other post-season honors. Buerkle, a senior from Stacy, Minn., has been named an All-American four times prior in the 400-meter dash, in both indoor and outdoor track.
