Q: I notice you talk a lot about Lucy in your songs. Is that a kind of metaphor?
A: Yeah, it started as a metaphor for the devil. And then from there people kept going, “What’s Lucy?” and I kept making up new things for what it was. And then it slowly turned into all kinds of different things. It started as a loose metaphor for bad shit, and as it went on the kids determined what Lucy was. For me, Lucy was drinking, Lucy was codependency, Lucy evil – but the evil inside, as opposed to actually being a women or a person.
Q: Do you have any advice for people who are from a small town? What do you have to do to make it big?
A: Man, I don’t know what you gotta do to make it big from anywhere! Whether you’re from a small town or a big one. All I know is that we kept working. We just kept working at it. Kept doing anything and everything to stay busy even if it wasn’t bringing back any resources. Even if it was for the sake of exercising it and keeping it busy. And I have to believe that anybody who chases a dream should probably use that as their focus.
