There is one day every year that is set aside just for love. It is filled with red and pink shirts, ties, heart-shaped sugar candies with “Be Mine” written on them. It seems as though there are red roses on every corner and boxes of chocolate stuffed in cases. It’s a day full of clichés, but what’s not to love about Valentine’s Day? There’s even more to love this year, because it lands on a Saturday. There are more opportunities for date night! Bemidji may be a frozen tundra right now, but that doesn’t mean it can’t melt with love for one day. So find a date—it could be your mom, brother, best friend, or significant other—and hit the town for some cool ways to spend your Valentine’s Day.
There might be some days you don’t feel like going out and spending money. If living on a college student’s budget is breaking the bank, don’t worry, there are still some affordable options that make an awesome Valentine’s Day possible. Grab some friends or that special someone and head to Papa Murphy’s on Beltrami Drive for a take-out pizza. Not only is it quick and easy, but the pizzas are shaped as hearts. There are three Red Boxes in town, and a movie from each costs fewer than two bucks. Grab that pizza and movie and head home to the couch that has been begging for someone to lounge on it all day long. This is an affordable, yet great date night for less than $12!
Movie Theaters also tend to feed into the day of love by putting out a conveniently-timed release. This year it’s the long-talked about Fifty-Shades of Grey. Movie tickets are only $8. After you get there, grab some popcorn and get ready for a scorching show.
Valentine’s Day is not only a day for love, but it is also a day for chocoholics. Yes, there are many of us out there, and the 14th of February is the day chocoholics can embrace their love for a special someone along with their beloved chocolate. Good thing there is an amazing little shop called Chocolates Plus located on Beltrami Ave. There are a variety of different treats just waiting to be picked out and taken home. Since chocolate on V-day just isn’t sweet enough, after getting a few boxes—after all, who can get only one?—head to one of the local flower shops and get a few roses. Even if there is no one to receive them, everyone deserves a little something red on Valentine’s Day.
Looking for a more extravagant way to spend your night? Head to the Hampton Inn located on Paul Bunyan Drive. They are hosting a “Valentine’s Day Romantic Evening,” complete with a gourmet dinner being prepared by Chef Lenard Riley. On top of an extravagant dinner, there will also be musical selections performed by local artists, including one of BSU’s own professors, Mark Christianson. The total cost for admission is $60.
Additionally, local bars around Bemidji always manage to have some great drink special to show their love for local customers on Valentine’s Day. Each bar varies for drink specials, so look for the red and pink signs outside each to see which specials sound most appealing. A night out on the town is always a great way to end such a special day!
So whether it’s pizza, a movie, or a fancy dinner, make sure to spend Valentine ’s Day with some special people by doing a few things around Bemidji that will make for an unforgettable day.
