Feeding the Community

By Melissa Mathies

Bemidji State’s own Student Nurses Association hopes to have started a new campus tradition: trick-or-treating not for candy, but for canned goods.

“In Oak Hall, a few girls walked past,” recalled Nursing Student Kayla Chromy, “so we asked them if they wanted to donate some non-perishable food for the food shelf. They said they didn’t think they had any and then realized they had just gone shopping, so they just gave us a plastic bag of Campbell’s soups.”

Nursing students carried large brown paper bags and asked for donations at Oak, Tamarack, Birch, and Pine Hall. They also put boxes in each dorm to hopefully collect more from students who either couldn’t donate at the time or weren’t in their rooms.

On November 6th, they brought the 331 food items that were collected to the Bemidji Community Food Shelf.

“It is just greatly appreciated,” said Mary Mitchell, the non-profit’s 0director.
