A Northern Student How-To: Apply for Internships

By Andrea Nadeau

It was during the 1980s when internships really gained some momentum for young adults and today internships are becoming more and more important to have on your resume after college. Doing an internship is a great way to get your foot in the door for a company or business, but it is also a great way to test out a job you may be interested in after college, where gaining experience is key. Having one on your resume may make all the difference when applying for those “adult” jobs after college. Overall, it is something every college student should do but you can’t expect to have one fall right into your lap.

First, you need to do some research and find internships that you may be interested in. Keep in mind that not all internships are paid ones, so be sure to narrow your search if that is a deciding factor for you. Many businesses in the local area have done internships before so Bemidji may be a perfect fit for you, but narrowing your search to local areas may also get you out of your comfort zone. If you are not sure how to find internships to apply to, try visiting Career Services on campus to get some free and fast help.

Next, you should work on your resume and specify it accordingly to your desired internship or position. Career Services can also help with building a resume and is able to provide lots of useful templates and other tools that will make your resume one that stands out. While you should have a good resume and cover letter when you apply for an internship, the most important thing during the application process is the interview. When and if it comes time for that, keep it professional while being friendly and remember to dress smart.

Finally, if you land the gig, go into the internship with an open mind and the dedication to do a fantastic job. This is where you can work on networking with co-workers and hopefully get some resources for your resume in the future. However, if you’re still wondering what the point of doing an internship is, keep in mind that after college employers are going to be looking at resumes that have the kind of work experience needed to perform the job. Thus, it is very important in today’s working world to have experience visible on your resume.
